ボイス・オブ・アメリカによる英語学習者向けのVOA Special EnglishというPodcastプログラムのなかのシリーズ。アメリカ合衆国の建国以来の著名人などの伝記を易しい英語にまとめて、ナレーターがゆっくりと読む。一編15分程度。
取り上げられている人物には黒人、先住民族、女性、芸術家、音楽家、核爆弾開発関係者などが多いような気もする。アメリカ政府による各種プロパガンダの一環でもあるのだろう。
このシリーズ自体は現在も続けられている。ただ、ナレーションだけだった当初と異なり、現代のアメリカに生きる人を動画で紹介するなど制作方針が変更されている。

香港の英語学習者向けの美國之音というサイトにPeople in Americaの過去分のアーカイブがある。ナレーションの音声データやその原稿のテキストファイルがダウンロードできる。ときどき子守唄代わりに聴くことがあるので、一部のエピソードについて直接リンクを記す。蛇足だが、英語の得意な人には向かないと思う。
